This legendary herb originates from the drop of divine nectar. It provides good care to the digestive system. It is recommended for treating constipation, colitis, distension, piles, jaundice, and wounds.

It is known as “Kayastha,” which protects the digestive fire. It is a medium-sized tree found mainly in deciduous forests and areas of light rainfall. In the south of India, the Ayurvedic Vaidyas are generally identified with this medicinal herb as its practical uses are manifold. Also, the word “Harare” means carrying away all diseases.

Haritaki has laxative, rejuvenative, purgative, astringent, and dry properties. The paste of its fruit effectively reduces swelling, hastening the healing process, and cleanses wounds and ulcers. The paste gives relief to the eyelids in case of conjunctivitis. Gargling with Haritaki decoction helps with stomatitis, oral ulcers, and sore throat. It serves as a good astringent for loose gums, bleeding, and ulceration of gums. It responds well to gastrointestinal ailments, tumors, ascites, piles of the liver spleen, worms, and colitis. Powdered Haritaki, mixed with jaggery, works well in gout. When combined with honey and ghee, its powder is an effective remedy for anemia.

Haritaki is combined with Sunthi powder and given in hot water to lighten asthma and hiccups. When taken along with honey, its decoction is of great help in hepatitis and obesity. It is an excellent nervine tonic that helps with nervous weakness and irritability and promotes the receiving power of the five senses. Since it is anti-inflammatory and astringent, it is helpful in urethral discharges like spermatorrhea and vaginal discharges like leucorrhea.
